History
1868 - The beginning

The original Newark Town FC was formed in 1868 and eventually found itself a member of the Midland Counties League where it enjoyed some success. The records also show that Town claimed some notable scalps in the FA Cup at its Muskham Road ground.
The Club fell on hard times and was eventually disbanded in the mid 1930's with its Muskham Ground eventually coming into the ownership of the Newark Youth League [traces of the former terraces still remained in the early 1980's]. The ground was then the subject of a CPO to form part of the new cattle market site and, unfortunately, the opportunity was missed to obtain a suitable alternative site for a ground which would have served Newark football in the future.
A brief renaissance

In the 1970's a small group led by Keith Bee reformed the club and, playing on Devon Park, with some good local young players entered one of the Nottingham leagues. This venture was short lived however and the name of Newark Town again passed into history.

Under the leadership of current Chairman Paul Baggaley the club was reformed again in the late 1980’s and its first venture was to enter a team in the Notts. Imperial Youth League [U16 Division] with the specific aim of developing a young squad that would progress to senior football. From 1990 to 1994 a Junior Section became established playing in the Young Elizabethan and Notts Imperial Youth Leagues. In 1994 the Club took the step into Senior Football by entering teams in the Midland Regional Alliance and Grantham and District League focusing on good young local players. In 1997 the Club was admitted into membership of the Notts Football Alliance, the then senior league within the County. During 1998 the club was instrumental in establishing the New Newark Youth League and now runs teams from Under 8 to Under 16.
The hard work put in by Chairman Paul Baggaley and the Committee over the years has led to the club being awarded FA Community Club Status that resulted in grant aid becoming available on top of normal fund raising which allowed a joint effort with Newark and Sherwood DC to enhance the facilities at Devon Park as the base of the Youth and Junior Sections.
The Seniors Renaissance

At the start of the 2003-04 seasons a major decision was taken regarding the Saturday Senior Teams and this saw former Semi-Professionals Brett McNamara and Tony Joynes recruited as Joint Player Managers and this quickly led to the the senior side being reinvigorated with a good mix of experienced and younger players and resulted in the Notts Alliance Division One Championship being secured in 2003-04.
This allowed the club to take another step forward and it joined the Central Midlands League for 2004-05 thus becoming part of the FA’s League Pyramid and giving the chance for further advancement. To provide a link into senior football the club also entered a side in the Northern Alliance U19 league. After consolidating its position in seasons 2004-05-06 in the CMFL Premier Division with 7th and 9th place finishes season 2006-07 was disappointing as the Club found it difficult to recruit sufficient players for its two sides and there was a further blow during the close season as Joint Managers Brett McNamara and Tony Joynes, who had driven things forward over the previous 4 seasons both resigned. The decision was taken to scrap the Reserve Team and its Manager, Rupert Thomas, was promoted to Team Manager with the task of ensuring that the work which had been done was not wasted. During 2007-08 he recruited a number of new players and towards the end of that season the new look side was putting together some good results. The restructuring carried out by the FA in respect of a new Step 6 league also saw the Club promoted into the CMFL Supreme Division. Some more good recruitment by Manager Thomas saw the Club finish fifth in its first season in the Supreme Division despite losing the majority of its strike force through injury or suspension after Christmas 2008.
On and off the field the Senior Teams made steady progress in 2008-09-10 with General Manager Gary Johnson spearheading a drive to raise more funds via sponsorship and advertising and Rupert Thomas ensuring that playing standards were maintained. The latter resulted in the Club winning the CMFL Senior Challenge Cup at the end of the 2009-10 season in a tremendous game against League Champions Louth Town at Alfreton Town's ground which went to a penalty shoot out.
Unfortunately this brought the attention of some of the squad to teams at a higher level and a number of key players left during the close season. This saw the club having to rely more on youngsters during 2010-11 but these players did not let the management down and a reasonably high league placing was again achieved.
Rupert Thomas decided to step down at the end of the season 2010-11 and Assistant [and former] Manager Tony Joynes was appointed by the Committee to take his place being tasked to maintain the standards the Club had achieved, both on and off the field, in the previous seven seasons.
By arrangement with Collingham FC the Senior Team will continue to play its home games at their Station Road, Collingham, Ground and the Reserves will remain based at Devon Park, Newark.
